Investigation launched after Barrow paedophile dies in prison
An investigation has been launched following the death of a convicted paedophile from Barrow who died while serving a prison sentence prompting a formal inquiry by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.
The offender who had been convicted of serious child sex offences died inside prison custody. Authorities confirmed that standard procedures were immediately followed, including notifying the watchdog responsible for investigating all deaths in custody.
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) has begun a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Such investigations are routine whenever a prisoner dies with the aim of ensuring transparency and determining whether any contributing factors were involved.
Cumbria Police and prison authorities are assisting with the inquiry, although early reports indicate that the death is being treated as non suspicious. However the final cause of death will be confirmed following the completion of the investigation and inquest process.
The individual had previously been sentenced for serious sexual offences involving children and was registered as a sex offender at the time of imprisonment. He had been serving his sentence in custody when he died.
Officials have not released further personal details but confirmed that next of kin have been informed and are being supported by relevant services.
The PPO has stated that it will examine prison records healthcare involvement and the overall circumstances leading up to the death before publishing its final report.
Deaths in custody are independently reviewed in the UK to ensure that all prisoners are treated safely and lawfully while in state care and to identify any lessons for future prison management.
The investigation remains ongoing.
