Injury-Hit Workington Comets Show Grit in Victory Over Berwick
An injury-hit Workington Comets side delivered a determined and resilient performance to defeat Berwick Bandits 48-42 in the second leg of their Knockout Cup clash at Northside. Despite the victory, the result was not enough to overcome a heavy first-leg deficit, ending their cup hopes.
Forced to field a depleted line-up, the Comets relied on just four of their own riders, supplemented by guest appearances and a rider replacement for Craig Cook. Under the circumstances, their performance reflected strong team spirit and determination.
Leading from the front was new number one Jonas Jeppesen, who delivered an outstanding maximum score of 18 points against his former club. He was well supported by skipper Troy Batchelor with 12 points and Tate Zischke adding 11, as the Comets secured 11 heat wins on the night.
The use of rider replacement proved effective, contributing nine points, although the team could only manage five heat advantages overall. Berwick’s consistent scoring ensured they maintained control across the two legs, progressing despite the second-leg defeat.
Guest rider Mitchell Cluff contributed with steady performances, while Dayle Wood made an early impact but was unable to add further points. Meanwhile, young reserve Jamie Etherington continued to find the step up challenging.
For Berwick, former Comet Peter Kildemand led the scoring with 10 points, supported by a trio of riders who each added solid contributions to secure their overall victory.
Although eliminated, Workington’s spirited display highlighted their fighting qualities and provided encouragement despite the adversity they faced.
