ILLEGAL FIRES IN LAKE DISTRICT LEAD TO FINES DURING SUMMER PATROLS
Several people have been issued fines after being caught lighting illegal fires during joint patrols across the Lake District as authorities continue to crack down on anti social behaviour and protect the area's natural environment.
The enforcement operation brought together police officers, council teams, fire services, national park rangers and landowners to patrol some of the region's busiest visitor hotspots. During the patrols, officers discovered people breaching Public Space Protection Orders by lighting unauthorised fires, resulting in immediate enforcement action.
Those found responsible received Fixed Penalty Notices of up to £100, with officials warning that anyone who fails to pay or commits more serious offences could face prosecution and court imposed fines of up to £1,000. Authorities said the restrictions are designed to prevent environmental damage and reduce the risk of wildfires during the busy summer season.
The patrols covered a number of popular beauty spots, including parts of Ullswater and Windermere, where Public Space Protection Orders are already in force. These areas have experienced recurring issues involving illegal camping, littering and unauthorised fires, particularly during periods of warm weather and increased visitor numbers.
Officials said most visitors continue to enjoy the Lake District responsibly, but a small minority continue to ignore restrictions that are in place to protect wildlife, landscapes and local communities. Even small campfires can cause lasting damage to sensitive habitats and increase the risk of larger fires during dry conditions.
Authorities are encouraging residents and visitors to report incidents of anti social behaviour, illegal fires and environmental damage whenever it is safe to do so. Photographs, vehicle registration numbers and other evidence can help officers identify offenders and support enforcement action where appropriate.
The latest enforcement action forms part of a wider summer campaign to preserve the Lake District's natural beauty while ensuring it remains safe for everyone to enjoy. Patrols are expected to continue throughout the holiday period, with officials making it clear that anyone who disregards the rules risks facing financial penalties and possible prosecution.
