Illegal Campers Fined During Lake District Beauty Spot Patrol.

Enforcement officers have taken action against illegal camping in the Lake District during a patrol of some of the area’s most popular beauty spots.

Westmorland and Furness Council officers carried out the patrol on August 26, visiting areas including Langdale, Windermere and Coniston following concerns raised by local residents. The team arrived at Blea Tarn at around 7.15am, where they discovered two people staying in a tent.

Officers also found evidence of a bonfire and barbecue, which had caused damage to the surrounding area. Both individuals were cautioned and issued with Fixed Penalty Notices. The patrol then continued towards the western side of the Windermere Public Space Protection Order area, where officers worked alongside National Trust colleagues.

Several people were spoken to during the patrol, although officers found no ongoing anti social behaviour or further environmental damage in the area. The operation also resulted in an unexpected rescue when officers travelling towards Coniston discovered a horse standing in the middle of the road.

A nearby farmer confirmed that a gate had been left open, allowing the horse, named Milli, to escape. Officers safely escorted the animal back to its field. On reaching the eastern side of Coniston Water, the team carried out a deep clean of several known unauthorised camping areas.

The patrol forms part of wider efforts to tackle illegal camping, environmental damage and anti social behaviour across the Lake District, while protecting the area's landscapes and supporting local communities. Officials have continued to encourage visitors to enjoy the Lake District responsibly and to avoid activities that could damage the environment or disturb other visitors and residents.
