Hundreds get hearts screened in Ulverston thanks to two mums
A major heart screening event in Ulverston has helped hundreds of young people get tested for potential heart conditions thanks to the dedication of two local mums who have been campaigning for better awareness and prevention.
The initiative was organised in memory of their children and inspired by the desire to prevent other families from experiencing similar tragedy. Their efforts focused on raising funds for cardiac screening services for young people under 35 through support from medical charities and community donations.
During the event, around 100 young people were screened for undiagnosed heart conditions. The screening was carried out by specialist cardiac professionals who checked for potential hidden heart abnormalities that often show no early symptoms.
The organisers described the day as both emotional and positive, highlighting the importance of early detection and community support. Although the inspiration behind the event came from personal loss, the outcome provided hope that lives could be saved in the future through early diagnosis.
The screening programme is part of a wider effort to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death in young people, which can often occur without warning. Each screening session is designed to identify risks early and provide referrals for further medical assessment where necessary.
Community support played a major role in making the event possible, with volunteers, medical teams, and donors all contributing to its success. The organisers hope to continue running similar heart screening events across the region to reach more young people.
Overall the initiative shows how personal tragedy has been transformed into a powerful mission to improve public health awareness and early detection of heart conditions in the community.
