Historic Tall Ship to Visit West Cumbria This Summer
A striking tall ship will be making a summer visit to West Cumbria, drawing sailing enthusiasts and history lovers to Whitehaven Harbour.
The Nao Santa Maria, a detailed replica of the vessel Christopher Columbus sailed on his 1492 voyage to the Americas, is scheduled to arrive in Whitehaven on July 31 and remain until August 10.
Built around 2018 by Spanish shipwrights using traditional 15th-century methods, the ship now serves as a floating museum managed by the Fundacion Nao Victoria. During its stay, visitors are expected to have the opportunity to explore the historic-style vessel and learn about its maritime heritage.
The visit has been made possible through the support of Whitehaven Town Council, Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, and several local sponsors including Sellafield Ltd, Amentum, Jennings, Delkia and Cavendish Nuclear.
Organisers say the arrival of the Nao Santa Maria will be a highlight of the summer season in Whitehaven, building on the town’s longstanding maritime traditions and offering a rare chance to see a vessel of this type up close.
