Historic Tall Ship to Dock in West Cumbria This Summer

28 May 2026 Historic Tall Ship to Dock in West Cumbria This Summer

A historic tall ship will make a special visit to West Cumbria later this summer, bringing a unique maritime attraction to the region for nearly three weeks.

The Nao Santa Maria, a full-scale replica of the vessel sailed by Christopher Columbus during his 1492 voyage to the Americas, is scheduled to dock in Whitehaven from July 20 until August 10.

The impressive ship is currently touring internationally as part of a major historical outreach programme that will see it travel to around 30 destinations overseas. During its stay in Whitehaven, visitors will be able to explore the vessel daily between 10am and 8pm by purchasing onboard tour tickets.

Organisers say the attraction offers far more than just a look at a traditional sailing ship. Guests will have the opportunity to walk through the ship’s interior, discover how sailors lived and worked during the 15th century, and learn about one of history’s most famous voyages.

Constructed by Spanish shipbuilders using traditional craftsmanship and techniques inspired by the original era, the vessel was completed in approximately 2018 and now operates as a floating museum under the management of the Fundación Nao Victoria.

The arrival of the Nao Santa Maria is expected to attract tourists, maritime enthusiasts, families, and history lovers from across the region. Local businesses are also likely to benefit from an increase in visitors during the busy summer period.

Whitehaven has built a strong reputation for hosting maritime attractions and tall ships in recent years, with previous events drawing large crowds to the harbour. The latest visit is expected to continue that tradition and provide a major boost to local tourism.

Officials have encouraged residents and visitors alike to take advantage of the rare opportunity to experience the historic vessel up close during its limited stay in West Cumbria.
