Historic Railway Carriages Find New Life in Carlisle School Library Project
A set of much-loved replica railway carriages that were previously part of Tullie Museum and gallery in Carlisle have been rehomed in a creative new project, providing a distinctive learning space for children at Belle Vue Primary School.
The historic carriages, which have been a familiar feature for visitors since around 1990, have now been carefully repurposed into a school library area. The transformation was delivered through a partnership between Story Homes and Tullie, with Story Homes’ joinery team helping adapt the structures for educational use.
The project has created an inspiring reading environment for pupils, designed to encourage learning and engagement with books. To mark the completion, the school hosted a special event where pupils had the opportunity to read aloud in the newly created space in front of guests, including representatives from Story Homes and Tullie.
Tullie confirmed that the carriages, which had been part of its displays for more than three decades, were being moved on as part of wider redevelopment plans to refresh and expand its collections and exhibition space.
School staff described the new library as a valuable and imaginative addition to the learning environment, while project partners highlighted the importance of preserving the heritage of the carriages by giving them a practical new purpose within the community.
The initiative has been praised as a strong example of local collaboration, combining heritage preservation with educational development to benefit future generations of pupils in Carlisle.
