Historic Guys Thatched Hamlet Shutters After 46 Years A Landmark Closes Its Doors
Guys Thatched Hamlet, an iconic thatched-roof hospitality complex just off the A6 at Bilsborrow between Preston and Garstang, has closed after 46 years of continuous operation, the Wilkinson family has confirmed.
The family-run venue, which first opened in 1980, was a well-known destination for locals and visitors alike. Over almost five decades, it grew into a sprawling 14-acre site featuring Owd Nell’s Tavern, a popular restaurant and pizzeria, sports pavilion and cricket ground, bowling green, function rooms and a 65-room hotel all set amid picturesque canalside surroundings.
In a statement posted on the venue’s doors, Kirk Wilkinson, director of Guy’s Eating Establishment’s Ltd., said: “After 46 years of trading, we can confirm that Guy’s Thatched Hamlet has now closed. This has been a difficult decision and one made with considerable thought.” He expressed deep gratitude to customers, staff and suppliers for their support over the years and acknowledged the emotional significance the hamlet held for many.
The closure comes after the business was put up for sale last February, with listings at the time indicating a net turnover of around £4.2 million.
The news marks the end of a distinctive chapter for the Lancashire hospitality scene. For decades, Guys Thatched Hamlet was more than just a roadside stop; it was a community fixture where families gathered, events were celebrated, and visitors experienced the region’s charm.
Local residents and loyal patrons are left reflecting on nearly half a century of memories at the hamlet from festive celebrations to simple weekend meals by the canal. As the site transitions through its next chapter, many are lamenting the loss of what had become a cherished part of life in the region.
