Heavy Downpours To Give Way To Midweek Dry Spells Across Cumbria
Heavy rain is expected across Cumbria before cooler temperatures bring a much drier spell during the middle of the week.
The county is facing a very wet start to the forecast period, with heavy rainfall and humid conditions expected to affect many areas. Temperatures will remain relatively high initially, with some locations reaching around 21C before a noticeable change arrives on Tuesday.
Rain is expected to remain widespread, with the majority of areas facing a high likelihood of downpours. Some southern parts of Cumbria could experience a drier afternoon, although conditions overall are expected to remain damp and unsettled.
The outlook changes significantly on Tuesday as temperatures fall to around 15C across much of the county. Conditions should become considerably drier, although gusty winds are expected, particularly in exposed and coastal locations.
Barrow and Whitehaven are among the areas expected to experience the strongest winds, with gusts potentially reaching 38mph. More sheltered inland areas should avoid some of the strongest gusts, although the cooler air will still be widely noticeable.
Wednesday currently looks set to be the most favourable day of the week for outdoor activities across much of Cumbria. The forecast indicates mostly cloudy conditions with sunny spells, temperatures around 16C and rain chances below 10 per cent in almost all areas.
The improvement is expected to be short lived, however, with unsettled weather returning from the west on Thursday. Western parts of the county are likely to face the greatest risk of rain, while temperatures are forecast to rise slightly to around 17C.
Carlisle is expected to experience a particularly wet start, with temperatures reaching around 21C before further rain continues into Monday. Tuesday will be cooler at approximately 15C, followed by a dry Wednesday before the risk of rain increases again on Thursday.
In Barrow, humid and wet conditions are expected initially, with temperatures approaching 21C. Rain is likely to remain a significant feature through Monday night, followed by cooler conditions on Tuesday and a largely dry Wednesday before further rain arrives later in the week.
Whitehaven is also expected to see heavy rain, with temperatures around 19C before further wet weather continues into Monday. Temperatures should fall to around 15C on Tuesday, while Wednesday is forecast to remain dry before rainfall becomes more likely on Thursday.
Further inland, Kendal is expected to remain wet through the early part of the week, with heavy rain and temperatures around 20C. Tuesday will become noticeably cooler at approximately 15C, while Wednesday should provide a dry break before unsettled weather returns.
Keswick is forecast to experience wet and humid conditions before rain continues into Monday. Temperatures are expected to fall to around 14C on Tuesday, while Wednesday should be dry and cloudy before rainfall pushes back in during Thursday.
Alston is expected to see some of the coolest temperatures during the forecast period. Heavy rain is expected initially, followed by a significant drop to around 12C on Tuesday, with a dry but cloudy Wednesday before rain returns on Thursday.
Across places including Penrith, Windermere, Maryport, Millom, Ulverston, Wigton and Workington, the general pattern remains similar. Wet conditions are expected at the beginning of the week, followed by cooler weather and a much drier Wednesday before further unsettled conditions develop.
The forecast therefore points towards a changeable week for Cumbria, beginning with widespread heavy rain before a cooler and brighter spell develops. Wednesday currently offers the best opportunity for a dry day, although residents should expect the unsettled weather to return from Thursday.
