Heavy Downpours Before Cumbria Warms Up For The Weekend

21 Aug 2026 Heavy Downpours Before Cumbria Warms Up For The Weekend

Cumbria is set for a wet end to the week, with heavy rain expected across much of the county before conditions improve significantly heading into the weekend. Temperatures will reach around 18C today, with the heaviest rainfall expected over the fells around Keswick and Ambleside.

The weather is expected to become noticeably brighter on Friday as showers gradually ease, although some southern coastal areas including Barrow and Millom could still see occasional rain. Inland areas such as Penrith and Appleby are expected to become drier more quickly.

Saturday is forecast to bring dry and bright conditions across Cumbria, with plenty of sunshine and almost no chance of rain. Sunday is expected to remain settled, with light winds and temperatures around 18C before warmer conditions arrive on Monday.

Monday is expected to be the warmest day of the five day outlook, with temperatures reaching around 20C across many parts of the county. The chance of rain is also expected to remain very low, with largely clear and settled conditions.

Carlisle is forecast to experience heavy rain today before a significant improvement, with sunshine and dry weather expected through the weekend and temperatures rising towards 20C on Monday. In the south of the county, Barrow and Millom could experience lingering showers on Friday before the weekend becomes considerably drier. Temperatures are expected to reach around 20C by Monday.

The western coastal areas including Whitehaven, Workington and Silloth are also expected to see rain today, followed by brighter conditions. The weekend forecast is largely dry, with temperatures gradually increasing into Monday.

Across the Lake District, heavier rainfall is expected today, particularly around Keswick, Ambleside and Windermere. However, the wet conditions should clear as the weekend approaches, allowing for a much brighter period.

The change in weather will provide a significant contrast after the heavy rain expected across the county today. Residents and visitors can expect much more settled conditions for outdoor activities during Saturday and Sunday.

The warmer conditions on Monday could provide another brief spell of summer weather across Cumbria, with temperatures approaching 20C in several areas and only a small chance of rainfall.
