Harmless Toy Grenade Sparks Coastguard Response on West Cumbrian Beach

Allonby, Cumbria Emergency services were called to Allonby beach after a member of the public reported what appeared to be a grenade, prompting a multi-agency response from coastguard teams and police.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team responded to the call on the afternoon of February 2, joined by crews from Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team and Cumbria Police. Upon arrival, officers cordoned off the area and carried out a careful assessment of the object.
After inspection, the item was confirmed to be a toy grenade and completely inert, posing no risk to the public. Police removed the object from the beach for safe disposal, bringing the incident to a calm conclusion without injury or danger.
A spokesman for Whitehaven Coastguard said that many objects found along the UK coastline can resemble dangerous ordnance and require specialist assessment, including marine pyrotechnics and ordnance. He thanked the member of the public for reporting their concerns promptly, emphasising that caution in such situations helps ensure public safety.
Coastguard teams regularly respond to a variety of incidents along the Cumbrian coast, from suspected threats to water rescues and missing person searches, highlighting the importance of public vigilance and timely reporting in safeguarding local beaches and surrounding areas.
