Green Light Given for New Flats on Long-Vacant Barrow Site

30 Apr 2026 Green Light Given for New Flats on Long-Vacant Barrow Site

A block of new flats has been approved for construction on a previously derelict and widely described “eyesore” site in Barrow-in-Furness, following a planning decision by local authorities.

The development will see the demolition and redevelopment of the unused or deteriorating site, which has been the subject of concern from residents and councillors for some time due to its poor condition and negative impact on the surrounding area.

Planning officers concluded that the proposal would bring a positive contribution to urban renewal in the area, helping to replace a neglected space with modern housing and improving the overall appearance of the neighbourhood.

The approved scheme forms part of wider regeneration efforts across Barrow, where several former industrial and unused buildings are being converted or replaced with residential developments in an effort to address housing demand and improve town centre conditions.

Developers behind similar projects in the town have previously argued that refurbishment of some older structures is not economically viable, making redevelopment the most practical option for long-term improvement.

Local reaction has been mixed in past cases of redevelopment, with some residents welcoming investment and others expressing concern about the loss of older buildings and the pace of change. However, council-led regeneration strategies continue to prioritise bringing unused land back into productive use.

Work on the new apartment block is expected to proceed following the completion of planning conditions and final preparations by the developer.
