Government launches major Waste Crime Action Plan to crack down on fly-tipping

10 Apr 2026 Government launches major Waste Crime Action Plan to crack down on fly-tipping

The Government has unveiled a new and expanded Waste Crime Action Plan described as the biggest crackdown yet on fly-tipping a problem that continues to affect communities across the country.

The initiative aims to strengthen enforcement and ensure that those responsible for illegal dumping face serious consequences. Under the new measures, individuals caught fly-tipping may be ordered into clean-up squads, requiring them to physically remove the waste they have dumped.

In addition, the plan introduces penalty points on driving licences for offenders involved in illegal dumping, adding further consequences that could affect their ability to drive legally.

To support enforcement efforts, the Government has pledged an additional £45 million for the Environment Agency enabling stronger investigation, monitoring, and prosecution of waste criminals operating across the country.

The plan also includes new police-style powers for relevant authorities, allowing them to quickly identify, disrupt, and shut down illegal waste operations before they can cause further environmental damage.

Officials say the measures are designed to protect local communities, reduce environmental harm, and ensure that those responsible forfly-tipping are held fully accountable under the law.

Local representatives have also highlighted that incidents of fly-tipping continue to be reported frequently by residents. They have confirmed that such cases are being reported to the council and urged the public to continue reporting incidents when they see illegal dumping in their area.

The message behind the new policy is clear: tackling fly-tipping requires strong enforcement, tougher penalties, and community cooperation to keep neighbourhoods clean and safe.
