Government Decision Looms Over Furness General ICU Service as Review Nears Conclusion
A major decision is expected in the coming period regarding the future of the Furness General Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU), after an independent review recommended changes to the service could be made permanent.
The review follows concerns about staffing levels and long term sustainability of Level 3 critical care services at the Barrow hospital. According to health commissioners, the service was temporarily adjusted due to difficulties in recruiting enough specialist staff to safely maintain full ICU capacity.
Under the current arrangement, patients who require the highest level of critical care are transferred to other hospitals once stabilised, while lower levels of intensive care continue to be provided at Furness General Hospital.
The Integrated Care Board (ICB) responsible for NHS services in the region has been considering whether the temporary suspension of full Level 3 ICU services should now become permanent. Officials have stated that patient safety and long term sustainability remain the top priorities in any final decision.
Local representatives, including MP Michelle Scrogham, have been involved in discussions with health leaders, reflecting ongoing concerns raised by residents and hospital staff about access to critical care services in South Cumbria.
A formal decision is expected after further scrutiny and consultation processes are completed, with local committees set to review the evidence before final approval is given.
Health leaders have emphasised that no final decision has yet been made, but the direction of travel suggests that a permanent service change is being strongly considered in order to maintain safe and reliable ICU care across the wider region.
