From Curiosity to Career: Young Solicitor’s Journey Inspires Aspiring Lawyers in Cumbria

01 May 2026 From Curiosity to Career: Young Solicitor’s Journey Inspires Aspiring Lawyers in Cumbria

A young solicitor from Carlisle is highlighting how an interest in law can grow into a successful career, as more opportunities emerge for aspiring legal professionals in Cumbria.

Sophie Engledow, now a qualified solicitor with Bendle's Solicitors, did not initially plan to enter the legal profession. Her journey began with a simple interest in law during her A-level studies, which later developed into a passion for the subject.

After achieving strong academic results, she pursued a law degree at the University of Central Lancashire, followed by a master’s qualification and Legal Practice Course (LPC). Her studies, however, were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, limiting access to traditional work experience opportunities.

Determined to build her career, Sophie joined Bendle's Solicitors as a legal administrator in 2023. Through dedication and hands-on experience, she secured a training contract the following year and has now qualified as a solicitor, joining the firm’s family law team.

She described the role as both challenging and rewarding, particularly when supporting clients through difficult personal situations.

Legal careers, experts say, often develop through a combination of opportunity, persistence, and practical experience rather than a fixed career path. Firms like Bendle's Solicitors continue to invest in training, mentoring, and professional development to help new talent succeed in the industry.

With growing demand for legal professionals across Cumbria, Sophie’s journey serves as an example for students and graduates considering a future in law.
