Four-Hour Parking Limit Proposed for A595 Laybys

04 Apr 2026 Four-Hour Parking Limit Proposed for A595 Laybys

A proposal to introduce a four-hour parking restriction at multiple laybys along the A595 has been put forward by local authorities.

Cumberland Council is considering the measure for around 20 laybys between Calder Bridge and Millom, following concerns about vehicles being left for extended periods.

Officials say some laybys are increasingly being used for all-day parking, limiting access for other drivers, particularly heavy goods vehicle (HGV) operators who rely on such spaces for mandatory rest breaks.

Under the proposal, enforcement officers would carry out periodic checks, and motorists who exceed the four-hour limit could face fines.

The council said the aim is to strike a balance between allowing drivers sufficient time to rest and preventing laybys from effectively becoming long-stay parking areas.

The plan forms part of a wider review of traffic regulations across Cleator Moor, Egremont, Millom and surrounding areas.

An informal public consultation on the proposal is currently underway, with residents, motorists and stakeholders invited to give feedback before a final decision is made later this year.
