Former Workington Comets Star Kyle Howarth Steps Away From Speedway
Former Workington Comets rider Kyle Howarth has announced an immediate break from professional speedway following a challenging season of setbacks.
The 32 year old, who currently rides for Leicester Lions in the Premiership and Glasgow Tigers in the Championship, informed both clubs that he would be stepping away from the sport with immediate effect.
Howarth has endured a difficult campaign marked by recurring injuries and illness, which have affected both his performances and enjoyment of racing. The former British Under 21 Champion admitted he no longer felt the same enthusiasm for competing after a demanding year.
Leicester have already confirmed they are working to secure a replacement rider, with their immediate priority being cover for the Knockout Cup Final against Ipswich. Glasgow will also have to adjust their line up ahead of upcoming Championship fixtures.
Howarth is well known to Cumbrian speedway supporters after representing the Workington Comets between 2012 and 2015, where he established himself as one of the club's standout riders. He later enjoyed success with several other British clubs, including helping Leicester win the Premiership Knockout Cup last season.
Leicester co promoter Stewart Dickson said Howarth had been honest about his feelings and explained that he was no longer enjoying his racing. Dickson praised the rider's professionalism and wished him, his family, and long time mechanic all the best during his break from the sport.
Dickson added that Howarth has always worn his heart on his sleeve and had spoken openly about struggling to enjoy racing this season. He said everyone at Leicester respected the decision and hoped the break would allow the rider to recover both physically and mentally.
It remains unclear when or if Howarth will return to competitive speedway. For now, one of British speedway's most experienced riders has chosen to step away from the sport while he reassesses his future after more than a decade at the top level.
