Families Urged To Check Free School Meal Eligibility Ahead Of September Expansion
Families across north and West Cumbria are being urged to check whether their children qualify for free school meals as an expansion of the scheme is expected to bring support to thousands more pupils in the region.
Around 2,110 additional children across north and West Cumbria are expected to become eligible for free school meals when the changes take effect next term. Parents and carers are being encouraged to check their circumstances and make an application if they meet the revised eligibility requirements.
Josh MacAlister, MP for Whitehaven and Workington, is encouraging families in his constituency to take advantage of the expanded support. Cumberland Council is expected to open applications shortly, allowing eligible families to apply ahead of the changes coming into effect.
The expansion is part of a wider national Government programme designed to extend access to free school meals to more children. Across the country, around 500,000 additional children are expected to benefit from the changes once the expansion is implemented.
For families who qualify, the support could provide a significant reduction in the cost of providing meals during the school week. The changes are expected to save eligible households around £500 per child each year, depending on individual circumstances and the number of children receiving support.
The expansion has been presented as part of wider measures intended to reduce the financial pressure associated with raising children. Access to free school meals is also being positioned as one element of efforts to tackle child poverty and ensure children have access to nutritious food during the school day.

He said children who are well fed are healthier, happier and better able to learn, linking access to nutritious school meals with children's wellbeing and educational experience.
