England Stumble Early As Pakistan Strike Twice At Lord’s
England were rocked by two early wickets as Pakistan made the stronger start to the second Test at Lord’s, with difficult conditions and disciplined bowling putting the hosts under immediate pressure.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to field, giving their bowlers the opportunity to exploit the overcast conditions at the famous London ground. The decision quickly paid dividends as England lost both opening batsmen during the first session.
Mohammad Abbas produced the first breakthrough when he dismissed Emilio Gay for eight. The Pakistan seamer found the edge of England's opener, with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan completing the catch to give the visitors an early advantage.
Abbas struck again shortly afterwards when Ben Duckett was trapped lbw for 17. The dismissal gave the experienced Pakistan bowler his second wicket and left England under considerable pressure at 26 for two.
The second wicket also marked a notable milestone for Abbas, who reached 900 first class wickets with Duckett's dismissal. His early spell proved particularly effective as Pakistan took advantage of conditions that offered assistance to the seamers.
Jordan Cox then joined Joe Root at the crease as England looked to rebuild their innings. Cox had made a significant contribution in the opening Test and was again given responsibility in the top order after replacing the injured Jacob Bethell.
England entered the match with confidence after a dominant victory over Pakistan in the opening Test at Headingley. Joe Root's side won that contest by an innings and 103 runs, leaving England 1 0 ahead in the three match series.
Root's return to the England captaincy has been one of the major storylines surrounding the series. He replaced Ben Stokes as Test captain and oversaw an emphatic opening victory, with England now attempting to secure the series at Lord’s.
Pakistan have made a significant change of their own, with Babar Azam returning as captain for the second Test. Salman Ali Agha had led the side in the opening match, but Babar's return provides Pakistan with additional experience as they attempt to recover from their heavy defeat in Leeds.
The start at Lord’s was also affected by poor weather, with the toss delayed twice before Pakistan eventually chose to bowl. The interruptions added further uncertainty to a contest already taking place under conditions considered favourable to the seam attack.
England retained the same overall line-up from their successful opening Test, while Brydon Carse was absent from the squad after being dropped following an incident in Derby that is under investigation. Sonny Baker was brought into the squad as his replacement.
The early setbacks mean England face a test of their batting depth as they attempt to establish a competitive first innings total. Pakistan's bowlers will be encouraged by the movement available to them and will be looking to maintain pressure as the session develops.
For Pakistan, the opening spell provides an important response after their disappointing performance at Headingley. Their bowlers have already demonstrated that they can make effective use of the conditions at Lord’s, but England will hope Cox and Root can settle the innings and prevent the visitors from gaining further momentum.
The second Test is being played at Lord’s as part of the three match series, with England looking for another victory that would secure the series before the final Test at Edgbaston. Pakistan, meanwhile, need a strong performance in London to keep the series alive and force a deciding contest in September.
