Dry Saturday Before Heavy Rain And Strong Winds Arrive Across Cumbria
Cumbria is set for a mostly dry and calm day before a spell of heavy rain and stronger winds arrives.
Saturday is expected to remain largely dry across the county, with bright or settled conditions in many areas and only a very small chance of rain. Daytime temperatures are forecast to reach between around 13C and 15C, creating a relatively calm end to the week before conditions deteriorate. The change in weather is expected to become increasingly noticeable from Sunday as a band of wetter and windier conditions moves into the region.
Sunday will bring a significant change for much of Cumbria, with rain becoming widespread and potentially heavy in several areas. Rainfall probabilities are expected to rise above 80 per cent across many inland locations, while coastal areas are likely to experience stronger wind gusts. Higher ground is also expected to see particularly wet conditions, with the combination of rain, wind and lower temperatures making conditions less settled.
The western coast is likely to remain slightly milder than some inland areas during the unsettled period. Barrow, Silloth and Workington are expected to experience stronger gusts because of their coastal locations, while temperatures should remain comparatively moderate. Motorists and pedestrians in exposed areas may nevertheless experience more challenging conditions as winds strengthen and rainfall becomes heavier.
Inland and higher ground locations are likely to experience a more pronounced deterioration on Sunday. Alston and Keswick are expected to see cooler daytime temperatures than many coastal communities, alongside an increased risk of sustained rainfall. The combination of elevated terrain and heavier precipitation could result in more persistent wet conditions as the weather system moves across the county.
Carlisle is expected to remain dry on Saturday, with temperatures reaching around 15C. Conditions will become wetter on Sunday before remaining damp into Monday, when temperatures could reach approximately 17C. The city is therefore expected to experience a relatively mild start to the unsettled spell before conditions begin to change again later in the forecast period.
Barrow is forecast to reach around 15C on Saturday with mainly dry conditions and coastal breezes. Sunday is expected to become wetter and considerably windier, with gusts potentially reaching around 13.3 metres per second. The coastal location means residents and visitors may notice the strengthening winds more clearly, particularly in exposed areas close to the shore.
Kendal is also expected to enjoy a dry Saturday, with temperatures reaching approximately 15C. The weather will change on Sunday as rain becomes increasingly likely, with the chance of precipitation reaching around 80 per cent overnight. People planning outdoor activities in the area may therefore want to make use of the more settled conditions before the wetter weather arrives.
Keswick is forecast to experience dry weather on Saturday with a maximum temperature close to 14C. Sunday is expected to bring a much wetter spell, with an estimated 82 per cent chance of rain. The surrounding higher ground may also experience stronger and more persistent rainfall, making the change particularly noticeable around the northern Lake District.
Penrith is expected to remain dry through Saturday, with temperatures reaching around 14C. A band of rain will then move across the area on Sunday, with the probability of precipitation rising to around 84 per cent by the evening. The change will bring a much less settled pattern after the relatively calm conditions expected during the first part of the weekend.
Whitehaven is forecast to have a dry Saturday with temperatures reaching approximately 14C. Sunday will become windier and wetter, with the chance of rain rising to around 77 per cent overnight. As with other coastal areas, stronger gusts are expected to accompany the unsettled weather, meaning conditions could become more difficult for people travelling or spending time outdoors.
Workington is expected to remain dry during Saturday, with temperatures reaching around 14C and coastal breezes developing. Sunday will bring a wetter and gustier spell, with the probability of rain increasing to around 54 per cent. The combination of wind and rain is expected to make the second half of the weekend noticeably less settled than Saturday.
Ambleside is expected to reach around 14C on Saturday while remaining largely dry. Sunday will bring a substantial increase in rainfall, with an estimated 85 per cent chance of rain overnight. The change will be particularly relevant for visitors planning activities in the central Lake District, where wet conditions can develop quickly and become more persistent around the surrounding hills.
Elsewhere, Appleby is expected to reach around 14C on Saturday before rain probabilities increase to approximately 60 per cent on Sunday night. Cockermouth should remain calm and dry on Saturday, with only a four per cent chance of rain, before heavier rain and stronger gusts arrive on Sunday. Egremont is also expected to remain dry initially, with temperatures around 14C, before wetter conditions develop.
Ulverston is forecast to see bright and dry conditions on Saturday, with temperatures reaching around 15C. Sunday is expected to become damp and increasingly gusty, with the chance of rain reaching around 59 per cent overnight. Grange-over-Sands is likely to follow a similar pattern, with dry conditions and temperatures close to 15C giving way to wetter weather as the weekend progresses.
The unsettled conditions are expected to continue into Monday, although temperatures will remain relatively mild in some northern areas. Carlisle could reach around 18C, while other parts of the county remain damp and breezy. The weather is then expected to begin drying out on Tuesday, although rain probabilities will remain around 47 per cent in some areas.
Tuesday will also mark a noticeable change in temperatures, with cooler conditions developing across Cumbria as the wet and windy spell begins to move away. Wednesday is expected to be cooler and more settled overall, although some parts of the county could still experience occasional light showers. The middle of the week should therefore bring a gradual return to more stable weather following the unsettled weekend.
The contrast between Saturday and the following days is expected to be particularly noticeable. While much of Cumbria can expect a dry and relatively calm Saturday, Sunday and Monday will bring more widespread rainfall and stronger winds before conditions gradually improve. Residents and visitors are therefore being given an opportunity to enjoy the more settled weather before the wetter spell arrives.
