Drug Driver Avoids Jail After Fatal West Cumbria Crash
A young driver who was over the legal drug limit has been given a suspended prison sentence after a fatal collision in West Cumbria.
Simon Nicholson, 21, of Cleator Moor, admitted causing death by careless driving while under the influence of cocaine, along with two counts of causing serious injury by careless driving.
The incident occurred on December 22, 2023, on the A66 near Marron Bridge, involving a Volkswagen Golf driven by Nicholson and a Suzuki Jimny.
A forensic investigation found Nicholson had been travelling towards Workington when his vehicle crossed onto the opposite carriageway, colliding with the oncoming car.
Maureen Henley, 72, who was a passenger in the Suzuki, suffered fatal injuries and died in hospital later that day. The driver of the vehicle was airlifted for treatment, while several occupants in Nicholson’s car were also injured.
Although roadside tests initially showed negative results, further blood analysis confirmed Nicholson was over the prescribed limit for cocaine at the time of the crash.
He was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years.
Following the case, police stressed the dangers of drug-driving, describing the incident as a tragic and avoidable loss of life. Officers also noted Nicholson had denied drug use and initially disputed responsibility, but evidence from the scene and witness accounts contradicted his claims
