Drug Dealer Jailed For 10 Years After £4 Million Cocaine Seizure In Cumbria
A major police operation in Cumbria has resulted in a drug dealer being jailed for 10 years after officers uncovered almost £4 million worth of cocaine hidden inside his vehicle during a roadside stop near Penrith.
Courtney Gaston-Hird, 34, of London Road, Sleaford, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court after admitting possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. The conviction followed one of the most significant cocaine seizures ever made by Cumbria Police.
The case began on 3 June, when officers from Cumbria's Roads Policing Unit stopped Gaston-Hird's vehicle near Penrith. During the stop, officers developed grounds to search the vehicle under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Gaston-Hird then attempted to flee on foot before being detained following a short pursuit.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 39 blocks of cocaine, later confirmed through forensic testing. Police estimated the drugs had a street value of almost £4 million, preventing a substantial quantity of Class A drugs from reaching communities both within Cumbria and elsewhere in the United Kingdom.
The seizure formed part of Operation Alliance, Cumbria Constabulary's ongoing strategy to combat serious and organised crime. Investigators said the operation demonstrated the importance of proactive vehicle stops in disrupting organised criminal networks and intercepting large scale drug trafficking.
Following the sentencing, officers from the Community and Serious Organised Crime Team said the conviction sends a clear message that organised criminals attempting to move drugs through Cumbria will be identified, arrested, and brought before the courts. They added that removing such quantities of cocaine prevents millions of pounds from reaching criminal groups that exploit vulnerable people for financial gain.
Cumbria Police continue to encourage members of the public to report suspected drug dealing and organised criminal activity. Officers said community intelligence remains one of the most valuable tools in identifying offenders and protecting neighbourhoods from the harm associated with illegal drug supply.
