DRS Puts Class 57 Locomotives Up for Sale as Fleet Modernisation Continues

29 Apr 2026 DRS Puts Class 57 Locomotives Up for Sale as Fleet Modernisation Continues

Carlisle-based rail operator Direct Rail Services (DRS) has announced that it is putting a number of locomotives up for sale as part of its long-term fleet modernisation strategy.

The company is offering four Class 57 locomotives, which were originally rebuilt from British Rail Class 47 engines. These locomotives have now been retired from active service as DRS transitions to newer and more efficient traction, including Class 68 diesel locomotives and Class 88 bi-mode units.

Alongside the locomotives, DRS is also selling a range of spare parts and materials linked to both Class 57 and Class 37 fleets. Items suitable for use in Mark 2 coaching stock often used by heritage railways are also included in the sale.

Managing Director Gottfried Eymer said the move reflects the company’s commitment to modernisation, noting that while the older locomotives have served the business well, they are no longer required for current operations.

DRS described the sale as a strong opportunity for rail operators, maintenance companies, and heritage organisations to acquire proven rolling stock and reusable components from a major UK freight operator.

Expressions of interest for the locomotives and equipment are open until 27 May.
