Drivers Warned Of Overnight M6 Closures Near Carlisle
Drivers travelling through the Carlisle area are being warned of overnight disruption on the M6 as resurfacing work is carried out along the motorway.
The southbound carriageway will be closed between Junction 22 of the A74M at Gretna and Junction 44 at Carlisle North. The closures are expected to remain in place for approximately five nights as the resurfacing programme progresses.
The overnight restrictions are scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 3. The motorway will be closed between 8pm and 6am each night during the planned works.
The closures will affect a substantial section of the southbound M6, meaning motorists travelling towards Carlisle and beyond will need to plan alternative routes during the overnight period.
In addition to the main carriageway closure, the southbound entry slip road at Junction 45 will also be closed while the resurfacing project is taking place.
The closure arrangements are intended to allow the resurfacing work to be completed safely while reducing the risk to road workers and motorists using the motorway during construction.
A signed diversion route will be available for affected traffic. Motorists will be directed away from the closed section and towards Longtown as part of the alternative route.
The diversion will use the A6071 and A7, providing an alternative route for drivers who would otherwise have travelled southbound along the affected stretch of the M6.
Drivers using the route during the overnight closures have been advised to follow the official diversion signs rather than attempting to use closed sections of the motorway.
Motorists have also been advised to allow additional time for their journeys. The diversion is expected to add time to some journeys, particularly for those travelling through the Carlisle and Longtown areas during the closure period.
The overnight timing means the restrictions will be introduced during the evening and remain in place through the early morning before the motorway reopens at 6am. The same arrangement is expected to apply each night for around five nights.
The works form part of resurfacing activity on the motorway, with the closures providing the necessary conditions for crews to carry out work on the southbound carriageway.
Drivers approaching the affected section from the Gretna direction should be prepared for the closure from Junction 22 of the A74M. Those travelling from the Carlisle side should also be aware of the restrictions extending towards Junction 44 at Carlisle North.
The additional closure at Junction 45 means motorists joining the southbound M6 at that interchange will also be affected. Drivers are therefore advised to check their route before travelling and allow sufficient time to use the signed diversion.
With the work taking place overnight, motorists planning journeys between 8pm and 6am should expect changes to their normal route and possible delays. Following the signed diversion via Longtown, the A6071 and A7 will help drivers navigate around the closed section.
The planned restrictions are expected to last for about five nights, after which normal access to the affected section should resume once the resurfacing works requiring the overnight closures have been completed.
