Driver caught with cocaine and ketamine on A591 near Ambleside sentenced

02 May 2026 Driver caught with cocaine and ketamine on A591 near Ambleside sentenced

A motorist has been sentenced after being found driving on the A591 near Ambleside with cocaine and ketamine in his system. The case was heard after police stopped the vehicle and investigations confirmed the presence of illegal drugs.

The court heard that the driver was travelling on one of Cumbria’s busy routes when officers carried out the stop. Tests later showed both substances were in his body while he was behind the wheel. Prosecutors said drug driving creates a serious danger because it can affect judgement, concentration and reaction times.

Magistrates were told that driving while impaired by drugs places not only the motorist at risk but also passengers, other road users and pedestrians. Roads around Ambleside can become particularly busy with local traffic and visitors, making safe driving especially important.

After considering the evidence, the court imposed sentence and made clear that drug driving is treated as a serious offence. Penalties in these cases can include disqualification, fines and a criminal record, depending on the circumstances.

The case serves as another reminder of the continuing efforts by Cumbria Police to tackle dangerous driving and reduce harm on the county’s roads. Officers continue to warn motorists that the safest decision is simple. Never drive after taking drugs.
