Drink-driver jailed after fatal crash that killed friend
A dangerous driver has been sentenced to almost 12 years in prison after causing a fatal crash that killed his friend before fleeing the scene.
The court heard that the man had been drinking heavily prior to getting behind the wheel, despite being over the legal alcohol limit. During the journey, his reckless driving led to a serious crash in which his passenger — described as a close friend — suffered fatal injuries.
Instead of staying to help, the driver left the scene, abandoning the victim inside the wrecked vehicle. Emergency services later arrived, but the passenger was pronounced dead.
Prosecutors described the driver’s actions as irresponsible and dangerous, highlighting that his decision to drive while intoxicated ultimately cost a life. The court also heard that fleeing the scene worsened the seriousness of the offence.
The judge handed down a prison sentence of nearly 12 years, emphasizing the devastating consequences of drink-driving and the betrayal of trust involved in causing the death of a friend.
Police reiterated warnings about the dangers of driving under the influence, stating that such reckless behaviour continues to have tragic and irreversible consequences.
