Drier Weather Set To Arrive In Cumbria After Wet Start To Week
Drier conditions are expected across Cumbria this week, with Wednesday emerging as the best day for settled weather.
The county is facing a distinctly mixed spell over the coming five days, beginning with widespread rain and unsettled conditions before a brief period of higher pressure brings calmer weather. Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid teens, making the week feel noticeably cooler than the warmer conditions experienced recently.
Rain is expected to affect much of Cumbria at the beginning of the period, with precipitation chances above 80 per cent across most parts of the county. Carlisle and Barrow are forecast to reach around 17C to 18C, although persistent rainfall will make conditions feel considerably less pleasant for people travelling or spending time outdoors.
Tuesday is expected to remain breezy, with daytime showers continuing across many areas before rainfall becomes less persistent towards the evening. Temperatures will also fall, with daytime highs generally struggling to rise beyond around 15C to 16C. Coastal locations are likely to experience the strongest winds, adding to the cooler feel across exposed parts of the county.
Barrow is among the areas expected to experience particularly blustery conditions, with coastal wind gusts forecast to reach around 17 metres per second. The combination of showers and strong winds will give Tuesday a distinctly autumnal character, while inland and higher areas are likely to feel colder as temperatures remain below those seen during recent weeks.
Higher ground around Alston is expected to be particularly cool on Tuesday, with the daytime temperature forecast to reach only around 13C. With the effect of the wind, conditions could feel closer to 9C. Meanwhile, western locations including Whitehaven and Workington are expected to see some of the highest rainfall probabilities before conditions improve during Wednesday.
Wednesday is forecast to provide the clearest break from the unsettled weather, with conditions expected to become dry and calm across Cumbria. Rainfall chances are forecast to fall below five per cent, making it the most favourable day of the five day period for outdoor activities. Temperatures will remain relatively cool, however, with highs of around 16C.
The improvement is expected to be temporary, with rain forecast to return on Thursday as another unsettled spell moves into the county. Southern and western areas are expected to be particularly affected, while temperatures should remain around 16C to 17C. Several parts of Cumbria are expected to have rainfall probabilities of around 60 per cent or higher.
Friday should bring some further improvement, with showers expected to ease and conditions becoming largely dry and settled across much of Cumbria. Rainfall probabilities are forecast to fall below 30 per cent in most areas, while temperatures could reach around 17C. The end of the working week is therefore expected to be considerably more settled than its opening days.
Carlisle is expected to experience a wet start followed by a gradual improvement. Temperatures should reach around 18C at the beginning of the period before falling to approximately 16C on Tuesday. Wednesday is forecast to remain dry, offering the city's clearest opportunity for settled conditions, while showers are expected to return as the week progresses.
Across the south of the county, Kendal and surrounding areas are expected to see substantial rainfall at the start of the forecast period. Kendal has an 86 per cent chance of rain today, with temperatures reaching around 18C, while Wednesday is expected to be completely dry before showers return on Thursday.
In the west, places including Whitehaven, Workington, Millom and Egremont are expected to experience a particularly wet beginning to the week. Workington has an 82 per cent chance of rain today, while Egremont is forecast to have an 82 per cent probability. The western parts of the county should then benefit from the dry spell expected on Wednesday.
The forecast also points to a useful contrast between exposed coastal communities and more sheltered inland areas. Barrow is expected to face strong winds alongside rain, while areas such as Ambleside and other inland locations should see the wet weather gradually give way to calmer conditions. Wednesday is expected to provide the most consistent dry weather across the county.
In the northern and central parts of Cumbria, towns including Keswick, Penrith, Appleby and Brampton are also expected to experience widespread rain before the midweek improvement. Keswick has an 86 per cent chance of rain today, while Penrith has an 84 per cent probability. Both areas are expected to become dry on Wednesday before rainfall returns on Thursday.
The five day outlook therefore suggests that residents should expect a wet and unsettled start, followed by a short but significant improvement in the middle of the week. Wednesday currently stands out as the strongest opportunity for dry weather across the county, although cooler temperatures will remain. Rain is then expected to return before conditions settle again towards Friday.
