Dog Walker Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Car in Cumbria

08 Apr 2026 Dog Walker Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Car in Cumbria

A dog walker was left seriously injured after being struck by a car on a rural road in Cumbria, a court has been told.

The incident occurred at around 3:40pm on April 4 last year near Warwick Bridge, when the woman was crossing the road while walking her daughter’s dog. Another driver had stopped to allow her to cross safely.

However, as she made her way across, she was hit by a white Kia Sorento driven by a 40-year-old woman.

Prosecutors said the victim was knocked to the ground and could not recall the immediate aftermath of the collision. She was still holding the dog when people came to assist her.

The woman sustained serious injuries, including fractures to her tibia and fibula, ribs, ankle, and humerus. She required surgery and spent more than two weeks in hospital. More than a year later, she is still unable to return to hobbies such as golf and gardening.

Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard that the driver should not have been on the road at the time, as she only held a provisional licence and was driving unsupervised. Two children were also in the vehicle during the incident.

The driver admitted causing serious injury by careless driving. She was banned from driving for 18 months, fined £400, and ordered to complete a 100-day nighttime curfew as part of a community order.

Her solicitor told the court she was deeply remorseful and described the incident as isolated.
