Dog rescued unharmed after falling 15ft down disused Lake District mine shaft

Dog rescued unharmed after falling 15ft down disused Lake District mine shaft

A dog was rescued uninjured after falling around 15 feet down a disused mine shaft in the Lake District, thanks to a coordinated response by Coniston Mountain Rescue Team.

The incident happened at Red Dell near Coniston on Saturday, December 20. Cumbria Police alerted the mountain rescue team at approximately 11.50am after the dog got into difficulty while out with its family.
Rescue volunteers deployed two vehicles to the scene and met the dog’s owners at the location. After assessing the situation, team members established a rope system to safely reach the animal trapped at the bottom of the shaft.
Using specialist equipment, rescuers secured the dog in a harness and carefully lifted him back to the surface. The animal was reported to be uninjured and in good spirits following the rescue.
“He was brought up safely and was very happy to be reunited with his owner,” the team said in a statement.
Ten members of Coniston Mountain Rescue Team attended the incident, which took around three hours to complete.
Disused mine shafts and old workings are common across parts of the Lake District, particularly in former mining areas such as Coniston. Mountain rescue teams regularly remind walkers and pet owners to remain vigilant, as hidden shafts can pose serious risks, especially in poor visibility or unfamiliar terrain.

The successful rescue highlights the vital role played by volunteer mountain rescue teams across Cumbria, who are frequently called upon to assist both people and animals in challenging outdoor environments.
