Cyclist Injured After Being Clipped by Overtaking Vehicle in Cumbria
A cyclist has sustained injuries after being clipped by an overtaking vehicle on a road in Cumbria, police have confirmed.
The incident happened when a motor vehicle attempted to pass the cyclist but did not leave sufficient space, resulting in contact that caused the rider to fall and suffer injuries. Emergency services were called to the scene, and the cyclist was treated for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene following the collision, and police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officers are seeking to establish exactly how the overtake was carried out and whether it met required safety standards.
Road safety experts regularly warn that motorists must allow adequate clearance when overtaking cyclists, as even minor contact can result in serious consequences. National guidance advises drivers to give at least 1.5 metres of space when passing cyclists where possible.
Police have appealed for any witnesses or dashcam footage to help with their enquiries as investigations continue.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about cyclist safety on rural and mixed-use roads across Cumbria, where narrow carriageways and fast-moving traffic can increase the risk of close-pass collisions.
