Cyclist Airlifted to Hospital After Serious A591 Crash

23 May 2026 Cyclist Airlifted to Hospital After Serious A591 Crash

A major road in Cumbria was temporarily closed after a serious collision involving a cyclist and a car near Waterhead. Emergency services attended the scene, and the cyclist was airlifted to hospital for urgent treatment.

A cyclist was airlifted to hospital following a serious collision on the A591 in Cumbria that led to the temporary closure of the busy route.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Waterhead at around 1.20pm on Friday after reports of a crash involving a car and a cyclist. The incident happened on the stretch of road between the A5075 Borrans Road junction and Holbeck Lane, an area that often experiences heavy tourist and commuter traffic.

Police, paramedics, and air ambulance crews attended the scene shortly after the collision was reported. Authorities confirmed that the cyclist, a man believed to be in his 50s, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and assisted officers with their inquiries. Police have not yet released further details about the circumstances leading up to the collision, and investigations remain ongoing.

Due to the severity of the incident, the A591 was closed for several hours while emergency teams treated the injured cyclist, and collision investigators examined the scene. Traffic disruption affected motorists travelling through the Lake District area, with drivers advised avoiding the route and seek alternative roads where possible.

The road was eventually reopened at around 4pm after recovery work and police investigations were completed.

The A591 is one of Cumbria’s busiest and most important roads, connecting several towns and tourist destinations across the Lake District. The route has been the scene of a number of serious incidents in recent months, prompting renewed calls for caution among motorists and cyclists using the area’s narrow and often congested roads.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident and may appeal for witnesses or dashcam footage as inquiries progress.
