Cumbrian Drink-Driver Has Extra Time Added to Ban After Aggressive Behaviour
A 37-year-old man from Brampton has had his driving disqualification extended after he was caught drink-driving and behaved aggressively towards police officers during his arrest.
Police were called at around 9.15 am on 18 November after a Volkswagen Caddy panel van was reported being driven erratically on Houghton Road on the outskirts of Carlisle. Officers located the vehicle and identified the driver as Daniel Kerr of Stanley Road.
Kerr was described as heavily intoxicated and initially refused to take a breath test. Due to his aggressive behaviour, officers were forced to handcuff him. While in custody, he reportedly banged his head against a desk and was placed in a cell for his own safety.
Once calmer, Kerr provided a breath sample that showed 46 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath above the UK legal limit of 35 micrograms.
At Carlisle Magistrates’ Court, Kerr pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol. The court heard that he was of previous good character and had worked as a professional driver for two decades, a career now under threat because of the conviction.
Magistrates imposed a £120 fine and extended his driving ban from 12 to 14 months due to his behaviour towards police. However, Kerr has been offered a place on a drink-drive rehabilitation course, which if completed within a specified period could reduce his disqualification by 14 weeks.
Road safety authorities continue to emphasise that drink-driving remains a serious offence with significant legal and personal consequences, including fines, disqualification, and potential job loss for professional drivers.
