Cumbrian Artists Open 57th Annual Exhibition At Carlisle Cathedral
The 57th annual Carlisle and Cumbria Artists Exhibition has opened at Carlisle Cathedral, bringing together dozens of local artists to showcase hundreds of original works while continuing a long standing tradition of raising funds for one of Cumbria's most historic landmarks.
Organised by Carlisle and Cumbria Artists, the exhibition is being held in the Fratry Hall at Carlisle Cathedral and features more than 280 original paintings and greeting cards created by 49 artists from across the county. Visitors can expect a wide variety of artwork, including Cumbrian landscapes, still life paintings, wildlife, portraits, and abstract pieces.
The exhibition traces its origins back to 1968, when the late Molly Mawson organised the first event at Carlisle's old Town Hall to raise money for the restoration of the city's 15th century Tithe Barn. Following the success of that exhibition, the Dean of Carlisle Cathedral invited organisers to continue the event as an annual fundraiser for the cathedral, a tradition that has continued for nearly six decades.
Chairman Terry Moore said the exhibition remains one of the highlights of the local arts calendar, attracting visitors interested in both Cumbria's artistic talent and the region's landscapes. He added that many artists value the opportunity to display their work in one of the county's most prestigious exhibition venues while supporting the cathedral through donations.
The exhibition includes artwork inspired by locations throughout Cumbria and the Lake District, offering visitors the opportunity to purchase original pieces that reflect the area's scenery, heritage, and natural beauty. All proceeds from sales and voluntary donations contribute towards the ongoing work and maintenance of Carlisle Cathedral.
Running from Saturday 18 July until Sunday 2 August, the exhibition is open daily between 10am and 4pm. Admission is free, with visitors invited to make voluntary donations in support of the cathedral. Access to the Fratry Hall is available through the Cathedral Café.
Organisers hope this year's exhibition will continue its long tradition of celebrating local artistic talent while attracting residents and tourists alike to one of Carlisle's most significant historic buildings.
