Cumbria weather: Heavy rain and strong winds before conditions settle for the weekend

01 Oct 2026 Cumbria weather: Heavy rain and strong winds before conditions settle for the weekend

Cumbria is set for heavy rain and blustery weather before conditions gradually become calmer, drier and cooler towards the weekend.

A distinctly unsettled spell is affecting the county, with heavy downpours and strong winds expected across many areas. The wet and windy conditions are expected to dominate the early part of the forecast period, with daytime temperatures remaining relatively mild despite the poor weather. Some parts of Cumbria could reach around 19°C to 20°C during the wettest period. However, the forecast points towards a noticeable change as the weekend approaches, with rainfall easing and conditions becoming increasingly settled.

Coastal communities are expected to experience some of the strongest winds during the unsettled spell. Whitehaven and Barrow are among the locations where stronger gusts could make conditions feel particularly brisk, especially during periods of heavy rain. Further inland, the picture will be somewhat different, with clearer skies later in the forecast period allowing temperatures to fall more sharply overnight. Eastern areas including Appleby and Penrith could see single-figure overnight temperatures as the weather becomes calmer.

The five-day outlook begins with widespread wet and breezy conditions, with heavy rain highly likely across Cumbria. Despite the unsettled weather, daytime temperatures could reach between 19°C and 20°C in some locations. The combination of rain and wind will make conditions feel considerably different from the calmer weather expected later in the week. Drivers, walkers and anyone spending time outdoors may therefore need to allow for difficult conditions while the heaviest rain moves through.

Thursday is expected to be noticeably cooler and cloudier, with temperatures falling to around 15°C or 16°C. Rain will continue overnight, meaning the unsettled spell will not disappear immediately after the initial downpours. The cooler conditions will mark a clear change from the mild temperatures experienced at the beginning of the forecast period. Some areas may still see periods of rain during the day, while further wet weather is expected to develop later.

Friday will remain unsettled, with a mixture of persistent rain and showers across the county. Western parts of Cumbria are expected to see some particularly heavy showers, while temperatures remain around 15°C to 16°C. The weather will therefore continue to feel cool and damp for much of the day, although the forecast suggests the wet spell will gradually begin to lose its grip. Conditions should then improve as the weekend approaches.

Saturday brings a significant improvement in the forecast, with most of the rain expected to clear away. Conditions should become much drier and calmer across Cumbria, although skies are likely to remain largely cloudy. Temperatures will be cooler than earlier in the week, generally reaching between 14°C and 16°C. The change should provide a more settled day for outdoor plans, following several days dominated by rain and stronger winds.

Sunday is also expected to remain largely dry and overcast across most of the county. Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach around 15°C to 16°C, maintaining the cooler feel that develops later in the week. While sunshine may be limited by cloud cover, the absence of widespread heavy rain will represent a marked improvement. The forecast therefore points towards a quieter and more settled end to the five-day period.

In Barrow, coastal winds and heavy showers are expected to be among the main features of the unsettled weather. Temperatures could reach around 18°C to 19°C, particularly during the earlier part of the forecast period, before conditions become calmer towards the weekend. The town should then see drier weather, although temperatures will fall back towards the mid-teens. The coastal location means stronger gusts may remain noticeable even as the wider weather pattern improves.

Kendal is also expected to experience widespread heavy rain, with temperatures reaching around 19°C during the wettest part of the forecast. Rain is expected to linger into Friday, although the weather should become much more settled by Saturday. The later part of the forecast brings drier conditions and cooler temperatures, giving the town a clearer transition from the unsettled middle of the week towards a quieter weekend.

Penrith is forecast to see wet conditions initially, with temperatures reaching around 18°C before the weather becomes cooler. Scattered showers are expected during Friday, followed by a much drier weekend with cloudy skies. The eastern location should also experience cooler overnight temperatures as skies clear later in the forecast. This means residents could notice a sharper difference between daytime and nighttime conditions as the unsettled weather moves away.

Whitehaven is among the western coastal locations expected to see a wet and breezy start to the forecast period. Heavy rain could push temperatures towards 18°C, while stronger coastal winds are likely to add to the unsettled feel. Conditions should improve considerably by Saturday and Sunday, when drier and more settled weather is expected. Temperatures will remain in the mid-teens as the county moves into the cooler weekend pattern.

Ulverston is forecast to experience heavy downpours during the earlier part of the period, with temperatures reaching around 19°C. Further heavy rain is possible on Friday before the weather becomes considerably drier and calmer over the weekend. Temperatures are expected to settle around 15°C later in the forecast, bringing a noticeable cooling trend. The shift from wet and windy conditions to a quieter weekend should be particularly clear by Saturday.

Across other parts of the county, similar changes are expected, although conditions will vary depending on location. Places including Carlisle, Cockermouth, Grange-over-Sands, Millom, Keswick, Workington and Windermere are all forecast to experience rain before a marked improvement towards the weekend. Coastal areas are likely to remain windier, while inland locations could see cooler nights once cloud and rainfall begin to clear.

The forecast is generated using Met Office data, with the outlook showing a clear transition from a wet and windy start towards calmer conditions later in the week. Anyone planning travel or outdoor activities should continue to take account of changing local conditions, particularly during periods of heavy rain and stronger coastal winds. By Saturday and Sunday, the forecast indicates that much of Cumbria should be enjoying a noticeably drier and more settled spell, albeit with cooler temperatures and plenty of cloud.
