Cumbria Volunteer Emergency Doctors Urge Public Support Ahead of Busy Season
A dedicated group of volunteer emergency doctors in Cumbria has launched an appeal for financial support as they prepare for one of their busiest periods of the year.
The organisation, known as BEEP Doctors (BASICS Cumbria), provides advanced pre-hospital medical care across the region, responding to serious incidents including road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests, and traumatic injuries. Over the past year alone, the team has attended 228 emergencies, highlighting the growing demand for their services.
Despite their critical role, the service relies entirely on public donations and receives no funding from the government or the NHS. Operating costs are estimated at around £250,000 annually, making community support essential for its survival.
The volunteer doctors work alongside emergency services such as police, fire crews, ambulance teams, and air ambulance units. Equipped with specialist training and equipment, they are able to perform advanced medical procedures at the scene—capabilities that go beyond standard paramedic care in some cases.
In addition to responding to emergencies, the team has contributed nearly 900 hours of voluntary service, including training and operational duties. Their work spans a wide range of incidents, from medical emergencies and trauma cases to farming accidents and rescue support in remote areas.
With demand continuing to rise, the organisation is urging individuals and businesses to contribute funds to ensure the service can continue saving lives across Cumbria.
