Cumbria Set For Dry Start Before Rain Takes Over Later This Week
Cumbria is set for a mostly dry and pleasantly warm start to the week before conditions become increasingly unsettled, with heavier rain and widespread showers expected to develop across the county.
The early part of the forecast offers some of the best conditions of the week, with generally dry weather expected across Cumbria and temperatures reaching the low 20s in many areas. Rain chances remain relatively low for most locations, although an isolated shower cannot be ruled out in parts of the county.
Carlisle is expected to experience some of the warmest conditions, with temperatures forecast to rise above 22C later in the week. Higher ground around Alston will remain cooler, with temperatures struggling to move beyond the high teens as the risk of rain increases.
Coastal areas are also expected to see a relatively dry beginning before the weather changes. Barrow and Whitehaven should remain largely dry initially, but the likelihood of rainfall will increase as the week progresses, particularly towards Thursday.
The weather is expected to become more unsettled from Wednesday, with rain chances increasing across western parts of the county. Temperatures will remain relatively mild, reaching around 21C in some areas, but cloud and showers will increasingly replace the brighter conditions seen earlier in the week.
Thursday is expected to bring a combination of higher temperatures and wetter conditions for many parts of Cumbria. Carlisle could reach around 22C, making it the warmest location in the county, but the day is also expected to bring widespread downpours and significantly higher rainfall probabilities.
By Friday, the forecast points towards a noticeable deterioration in conditions across the county. Temperatures are expected to fall back into the high teens, while widespread rain becomes increasingly likely, making it the wettest and cooler part of the five day outlook.
In Alston, temperatures are expected to remain comparatively low throughout the period, with a maximum of around 19C. Rain chances will increase substantially later in the week, reaching around 74 per cent by Friday, making conditions particularly unsettled across the higher ground.
Ambleside is expected to enjoy a dry start with temperatures around 20C before rain arrives from Wednesday onwards. The chance of downpours is forecast to reach around 58 per cent by Thursday, marking a clear change from the more settled conditions at the beginning of the period.
Around Appleby, conditions should remain mostly dry through the earlier part of the forecast, with temperatures reaching around 21C on Thursday. The weather is then expected to turn wetter, with Friday bringing a 65 per cent chance of precipitation and a greater risk of heavy rain.
Kendal, Keswick and surrounding areas are also expected to experience a gradual transition from relatively settled conditions to more frequent rain. Keswick could see rain chances rise to around 57 per cent during the middle of the week, while Kendal is forecast to remain around 21C through Thursday before wetter weather develops.
Western communities including Cleator Moor, Cockermouth, Egremont and Workington are expected to see a similar pattern. These areas should remain mostly dry initially, but rainfall probabilities are forecast to increase from Wednesday, with Thursday expected to bring some of the highest chances of heavier showers.
Further south, Barrow, Dalton in Furness, Millom and Ulverston are expected to remain mild, with temperatures generally around 21C. The dry weather should hold through the earlier part of the week before rainfall becomes more likely, particularly on Thursday as the unsettled conditions spread across the county.
The overall forecast suggests that residents and visitors can expect a marked change in conditions as the week progresses. The brighter and drier start will gradually give way to more cloud, showers and heavier rain, with Friday currently looking considerably wetter and cooler across much of Cumbria.
