Cumbria Police Say Hundreds of Collisions Have Cost £784,000 in Vehicle Damage

Cumbria Police have revealed that hundreds of collisions involving their vehicles have cost around £784,000 in damage and repair bills, according to figures released by the force.

The collisions include a wide range of incidents involving police cars, vans and other vehicles in the Constabulary’s fleet, with ongoing costs for repairs, part‑replacements and, in some cases, replacement vehicles adding up over time.

Police leaders say that managing and maintaining a safe fleet is a major challenge for the force, with officers often responding to emergency calls, attending incidents and travelling across large rural areas, increasing the risk of collisions.

The figures reflect both minor and more serious collisions, and include damage from incidents where police vehicles were parked and struck, as well as collisions that occurred while responding to emergency situations.

Cumbria’s roads pose particular challenges for policing, with long distances between towns, varying road conditions and frequent adverse weather, all factors that can contribute to higher collision rates.

The cost of repairing and maintaining vehicles adds pressure to police budgets already stretched by rising demand for frontline services and community safety work. Officers and fleet managers say that investment in driver training and vehicle safety systems is vital to reduce collisions and the associated costs.

Police chiefs have emphasised that every collision is taken seriously, with investigations carried out to understand causes and help prevent similar incidents in future. They also urge drivers across the county to take care on the roads to help reduce overall road traffic incidents involving all types of vehicles.

Despite the high number of collisions, police have stressed that there has been a focus on improving road safety, including targeted operations against dangerous driving and efforts to reduce fatal and serious collisions.
