Cumbria Police Ramp Up Stop Searches in Barrow to Battle Drug Crime
Cumbria Police have stepped up their use of stop and search powers in Barrow-in-Furness as part of an ongoing effort to disrupt drug-related crime and protect local communities. The enhanced policing activity forms part of a wider strategy to proactively tackle criminality and respond to concerns raised by residents and partners.
In early January, officers from Barrow’s Neighbourhood Policing Team carried out a dedicated operation targeting road safety, the illegal use of off-road bikes and drug supply in areas including Barrow Island and Walney. During the operation, around 70 vehicles were stopped and checked, and officers conducted multiple stop searches along with drug-screening tests.
While no illegal off-road bikes were found on that day, proactive checks led to the arrest and charging of a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of both possession of a bladed article and possession of cannabis. Officers also seized two vehicles for traffic offences.
Beyond local neighbourhood patrols, Cumbria’s Roads Policing Unit has also been active in tackling serious and organised crime that affects the Barrow area. In a recent high-profile M6 stop, officers stopped a vehicle and discovered 13kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of around £130,000. Two men from Manchester were subsequently charged and remanded into custody on suspicion of possessing Class B drugs with intent to supply, as part of Operation Alliance, the force’s ongoing response to serious organised crime.
Police leaders say the increased use of stop and search powers alongside targeted patrols, vehicle checks and joint operations is an important tool in disrupting criminal activity and removing drugs and weapons from the streets. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity through the official police reporting channels or anonymously via Crimestoppers if they have information on drug dealing or other crimes in their neighbourhood.
Cumbria Police emphasise that their efforts aim not only to enforce the law but also to build safer, more secure communities in Barrow and across the county.
