Cumbria Police Chief Stands Firm on Road Safety Record

Cumbria Police Chief Stands Firm on Road Safety Record

Cumbria’s top police officer has hit back at recent criticism over the force’s approach to road safety and traffic enforcement across the county, insisting that policing priorities remain focused on protecting residents and reducing collisions.
In a statement, the Chief Constable reaffirmed the Constabulary’s commitment to tackling dangerous driving behaviours on Cumbria’s roads. These include key regional routes such as the A592 through the Lake District and other rural highways that are prone to hazards.
The force has placed a strong emphasis on road safety operations targeting the so called Fatal Four causes of serious crashes. These are speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear seat belts, and mobile phone use at the wheel. Officers carry out regular patrols, enforcement campaigns and community outreach to encourage safer driving habits.
Addressing concerns from local leaders and residents, the Chief Constable said Cumbria Police continues to work closely with partner agencies to reduce collisions and keep the county’s roads safe. He highlighted ongoing efforts to balance enforcement with education and engagement, particularly in high risk areas that are frequently affected by seasonal weather changes.
Road safety statistics for the county show that while some collisions still occur, targeted policing has contributed to improved awareness and, in some cases, reductions in serious injuries. The Constabulary urged motorists to take personal responsibility for their driving and to comply with traffic laws.
Drivers are reminded that road offences carry strict penalties and that motorists can play a vital role in community safety by reporting dangerous driving when they see it.
