CUMBRIA PENSION FUND BACKS CHARITY CYCLIST ON 1,300KM FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE
A 1,300 kilometre charity cycling challenge has begun in Cumbria, with the Cumbria Pension Fund backing the ambitious journey to raise money for local charities and community projects across England.
The challenge began at Carlisle Castle, where Ewan McCulloch, Chief Stakeholder Officer at Border to Coast Pensions Partnership, set off on a ten day ride to the south coast. Along the route, he will visit all 18 partner local government pension fund areas whose investments are managed by the partnership, helping to raise awareness and financial support for charitable initiatives.
As part of the fundraising effort, the Cumbria Pension Fund has chosen to support Watchtree Nature Reserve's Watchtower Project, a scheme focused on protecting the historic Watchtower site and improving the surrounding land for future generations. Organisers hope the challenge will encourage donations while highlighting the important role community organisations play across the region.
Representatives from the pension fund said they were proud to see the challenge begin in Cumbria and welcomed the opportunity to support a project that holds special significance for many members of the organisation. They described Watchtree Nature Reserve as a valued local charity and said the initiative would help increase awareness of its long term ambitions.
Mr McCulloch said the physical and mental demands of cycling more than 1,300 kilometres are worthwhile when they help bring communities together in support of good causes. He expressed his appreciation for the encouragement received at the start of the challenge and said he hoped the journey would inspire further donations for charities across the country.
The fundraising ride is expected to continue over the next ten days, with stops planned across each of the partner pension fund areas. Throughout the journey, supporters will have the opportunity to contribute to local causes while following the cyclist's progress as he travels from Cumbria to the south coast.
The initiative highlights the growing role of organisations and public sector partners in supporting charitable projects beyond their core responsibilities. By combining endurance sport with community fundraising, organisers hope the challenge will leave a lasting impact for both local charities and the people who benefit from their work.
