Cumbria Gears Up for Global Spotlight as Countdown Begins to Legendary Tour de France Visit

The countdown is on in Cumbria as excitement grows for the return of the Tour de France, the world’s most famous cycle race, which will include stages in the UK in summer 2027.
According to local experts, the event widely regarded as the pinnacle of professional road cycling is expected to have a major positive impact on Cumbria, both in the run‑up to the event and long afterward.
The 2027 Tour de France men’s race will begin its Grand Départ in Edinburgh on 2 July 2027, with the first stage finishing in Carlisle later that day. Stage two will then travel through the Lake District from Keswick to Liverpool, giving local communities a rare chance to host world‑class cycling on home soil.
Professor Philip Leigh, senior knowledge exchange manager at the University of Cumbria and a seasoned cycling expert, says the race will be “the world’s biggest free‑to‑view sporting event,” offering residents and visitors alike the opportunity to watch elite cyclists compete without ticket costs.
Beyond the racing itself, organisers and local stakeholders anticipate a lasting legacy for the region. Events like this have boosted tourism and economic activity in areas previously visited by the Tour with predecessors such as Yorkshire’s stage hosting credited with significant regional uplift.
Professor Leigh also highlighted how the event can inspire younger generations, drawing schools and local groups into cycling‑related activities and helping cultivate new talent and enthusiasm for the sport.
Cumbria’s involvement in the Tour de France places the county on the global sporting map and is expected to spark increased visitor interest, cycling tourism and widespread community engagement in the years leading up to the iconic race.
