Cumbria Cup Clash Between Penrith And Upper Eden Postponed
One of the standout fixtures in the opening round of the Cumbria Cup has been postponed, with local rivals Penrith and Upper Eden set to meet later than originally planned.
The postponement comes after Penrith arranged a pre season friendly against Vale of Lune, creating a scheduling conflict with the cup competition. As a result, the first round encounter against Upper Eden has been rescheduled for October, although the exact date has yet to be confirmed.
Despite the change, the remainder of the Cumbria Cup first round is expected to proceed as planned on September 5. Rugby supporters can still look forward to several exciting fixtures, including a repeat of last season's final between Kendal and Keswick, along with Wigton taking on Aspatria and Hawcoat Park hosting Kirkby Lonsdale.
There has also been a change to the Cumbria Shield schedule. The opening round match between Cockermouth and Ambleside has been postponed because Ambleside relies heavily on university players who will not have returned in time for the original fixture. A new date for that tie has not yet been announced.
Elsewhere in the Cumbria Shield, Creighton will celebrate its centenary season by welcoming Millom, while Furness marks its return to competitive rugby with a home fixture against Carlisle. Fans can also look forward to a West Cumbrian derby as Whitehaven hosts Egremont, while Keswick Seconds will face Workington in another first round contest.
Several clubs have also received automatic passage into the next stage of the competition. St Benedict's, Penrith Seconds, and Windermere have all been awarded first round byes, allowing them additional preparation time before entering the tournament.
Although the postponement delays one of the competition's most eagerly awaited local rivalries, organisers expect the revised fixture to attract significant interest when it is played later in the autumn. With another exciting season of Cumbria rugby about to begin, supporters can still look forward to a packed schedule of competitive cup action across the county.
