Cumbria Council Workers Prepare To Vote On Strike Action Over Pay Dispute

10 Jul 2026 Cumbria Council Workers Prepare To Vote On Strike Action Over Pay Dispute

Thousands of council workers employed by Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council are set to take part in a ballot that could lead to industrial action over pay.

The vote follows the rejection of the latest pay offer by the Unite union, which says the proposed increase does not reflect the rising cost of living or adequately reward local government employees.

According to Unite, members working at the two Cumbria councils are among employees at 22 local authorities across England who are being asked whether they support strike action. The union argues that many council workers have experienced years of below inflation pay settlements and are seeking a deal that better reflects their contribution to essential public services.

If members vote in favour, strike action could affect a range of council services, although no dates have been announced and industrial action is not yet confirmed. The ballot is the first step in the legal process, with any future action depending on the outcome of the vote and any further negotiations between unions and employers.

The dispute comes as local authorities continue to face financial pressures while balancing demands for improved public services. Union representatives say fair pay is essential for attracting and retaining skilled employees, while employers must also consider budget constraints and the long term sustainability of council finances.

Both sides are expected to continue discussions in the coming weeks in the hope of reaching an agreement before any industrial action takes place. The outcome of the ballot will be closely watched by workers, residents, and local authorities, as it could have implications for council operations across the region.
