County Cup Shield Finals Set for Exciting Weekend of Rugby Action in Cumbria

16 May 2026 County Cup Shield Finals Set for Exciting Weekend of Rugby Action in Cumbria

Cumbria’s rugby community is gearing up for an action-filled weekend as clubs and county teams prepare for a series of important fixtures that are expected to attract strong local support and intense competition. The spotlight will fall on Wigton, where the County Shield Cup Final will headline a busy schedule of county rugby across the region.

The final of the County Shield Cup will see St Benedict’s face Keswick Seconds at Low moor Road in what promises to be one of the standouts matches of the weekend. St Benedict’s enter the contest as favourites after enjoying a significantly stronger league campaign, finishing sixth in the Counties 1 Cumbria standings with an impressive record of 11 victories from 19 matches. Keswick Seconds, meanwhile, endured a more difficult season, ending near the bottom of the table with only three wins.

Despite the contrasting records, cup finals are often unpredictable, and Keswick will be hoping to produce an upset performance on one of the biggest days of their season. Supporters from both clubs are expected to travel in large numbers to Wigton, adding to the atmosphere surrounding the occasion.

Match officials for the final have also been confirmed. Dan Shovelton will oversee the contest as referee, assisted by touch judges Mike Firby and Alistair Jones. Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm.

Elsewhere in the county, attention will also focus on Penrith, where Cumbria will host Northumberland in a crucial Bill Beaumont County Championship encounter at Winters Park. The fixture is considered one of the most significant matches in Cumbria’s representative rugby calendar and could play an important role in determining the county’s progress in the championship competition.

Officials for the County Championship clash include referee Alistair Sweetin from the Durham Society, with Martin Maughan and Simon Barker serving as assistant referees. Alasdair Boyle has been appointed as the fourth official. The match will also kick off at 3pm, creating a busy afternoon for rugby followers throughout the county.

The weekend schedule continues on Sunday with the Gill Burns Women’s County Championship fixture between Cumbria and Oxfordshire at Wigton. Women’s rugby has continued to grow rapidly across the region in recent years, and organisers are hopeful for another strong turnout as Cumbria’s women’s side aims to deliver an important performance on home soil. Simon Barker will referee the match, supported by Stephen Elliot and Stewart Mounsey on the touchlines, while Alasdair Boyle again takes the role of fourth official. Kick-off is set for 1pm.

Another county representative fixture will take place later on Sunday when Cumbria’s Under-17 side hosts Durham in Keswick. The youth match is seen as an important opportunity to showcase some of the county’s emerging rugby talent and reflects the continued investment in player development at grassroots level. Martin Maughan will referee the encounter, assisted by Alistair Jones and Joseph Ranford. The match is scheduled to begin at 3pm.

The County Shield competition itself remains one of the most historic and respected rugby tournaments in Cumbria. Dating back to the late nineteenth century, the competition has long provided clubs and second teams with an opportunity to compete for county honours and maintain strong traditions within the local rugby community.

With finals, championship clashes and youth fixtures all packed into one weekend, rugby supporters across Cumbria are expected to enjoy one of the busiest and most important periods of the county season. Organisers hope the strong schedule of matches will further strengthen local interest in the sport and highlight the depth of rugby talent across the region.
