Councillors Back Plans to Develop Iron Line Project in Millom

Councillors in Cumbria have been told that work to develop the Iron Line project in Millom and Haverigg is moving forward after a local government committee approved the next stage of planning and funding arrangements.
The Iron Line is part of the broader Millom Town Deal regeneration programme, with more than £20 million in Government support and additional local match funding aiming to transform a former railway corridor and the surrounding landscape into an accessible 7.5km walking and cycling route around Hodbarrow Nature Reserve. The scheme also includes plans for a visitor centre with a café, learning and event space, volunteer facilities and enhanced public art and heritage features.
Councillors were told that funding for the second phase of the project including a £7.1 million contract award to Story Construction for construction works has been approved with conditions, subject to planning permission and final lease agreements for the proposed visitor centre.
Supporters say the Iron Line will not only improve local infrastructure and health‑focused outdoor leisure opportunities but also attract visitors, strengthen the local economy and create jobs through both construction and operation of the facility.
Council members discussed the importance of continuing to engage with local stakeholders and statutory consultees to ensure the scheme respects sensitive environmental areas around the reserve while still delivering on its vision of celebrating Millom’s natural beauty and heritage.
If planning permission is granted later this year, construction could begin towards the end of 2026, with staged delivery aligned to environmental and funding milestones.
The Iron Line is seen as one of the flagship projects in Millom’s long‑term regeneration strategy, complementing wider efforts to protect local landscapes, improve wellbeing, and boost community pride.
