Consultation Begins Over Future of Two Cumbrian Care Homes

14 May 2026 Consultation Begins Over Future of Two Cumbrian Care Homes

A formal consultation has been launched into the future of two care homes in Cumbria as council officials review their long-term viability.

Westmorland and Furness Council has begun a 12-week public consultation focusing on Applethwaite Green Care Home in Windermere and Grisedale Croft in Alston. The move follows a cabinet decision made in April to assess all possible options for the facilities.

Applethwaite Green, a 27-bed home currently housing just 16 residents, has been described as outdated and increasingly expensive to run. Officials say the building no longer meets modern care standards and has struggled with staffing shortages and high reliance on agency workers.

Refurbishing the home to bring it up to current standards could cost between £2.5 million and £3 million, while weekly care costs per resident are reported to be more than double those of alternative providers. As a result, the council is considering multiple options, including refurbishment, rebuilding, or closure.

Grisedale Croft, which has just four residents in its 13-bedroom facility, faces similar challenges. The building is more than 50 years old and has exceeded its intended lifespan. Running costs are significantly higher than other care options, with weekly expenses estimated at over £4,000 per resident.

However, due to limited care provision in the Alston area, the council has indicated a preference for finding alternative accommodation locally if the current facility cannot be sustained.

Residents, families and staff are being encouraged to take part in the consultation, which runs until early August. Officials stressed that no final decisions have been made and that feedback will play a key role in shaping the outcome.

The council added that any future changes will prioritise the safety, wellbeing and continuity of care for residents, with support provided to both families and staff throughout the process.
