Concerns Raised Over Contractor Selected for Barrow Forum and Market Hall Demolition
Concerns have emerged following the selection of a contractor to carry out the demolition of Barrow’s Forum theatre and Market Hall, key buildings in the town’s redevelopment plans.
The decision, made by Westmorland and Furness Council, has drawn criticism from some councillors who say they were not adequately informed before the appointment was made. Questions have been raised about the level of communication and transparency surrounding a project of such significance.
According to reports, the contract—worth up to £7.9 million—has been awarded to a demolition firm based outside the local area. Some local representatives expressed frustration that they learned about the decision through media reports rather than official briefings.
Council leaders have acknowledged that communication could have been better and have apologised for any shortcomings. They stated that efforts will be made to improve updates as the project progresses.
The demolition forms part of a wider regeneration initiative aimed at revitalising Barrow’s town centre. However, the process is expected to be complex due to the presence of hazardous materials, including asbestos, within the buildings.
Officials have indicated that extensive planning and safety assessments must be completed before any physical work begins. As a result, demolition is unlikely to start immediately and may take several months to commence.
The future of cultural and commercial activities in the area remains a key concern, with residents and stakeholders keen to see clear plans for replacement facilities as redevelopment moves forward.
