Cockermouth GP Surgery Placed in Special Measures After CQC Concerns

A GP surgery in Cockermouth has been placed under special measures after inspectors raised continued concerns about its safety, leadership, and overall performance.

Castlegate and Derwent Surgery, based at Cockermouth Health Centre on Isel Road, provides care for more than 18,000 patients. The practice has been under scrutiny following repeated inspections by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), which previously rated it as “requires improvement”.

According to the latest findings, inspectors highlighted ongoing weaknesses in leadership, staffing stability, and governance systems. Concerns were also raised about whether the practice consistently had enough suitably qualified clinical staff to meet patient needs.

The surgery has faced mounting pressure over recent years, with health watchdog reports and parliamentary discussions drawing attention to its management and operational challenges. NHS commissioners have already stepped in with additional short-term funding and clinical support to help stabilise services.

The NHS Northeast and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board said it remains focused on ensuring patient safety and maintaining access to primary care, while working alongside NHS England and the CQC to support improvements.

Despite the concerns, the practice remains open and continues to treat patients, with locum GPs and additional clinical staff helping to maintain services while recruitment and recovery efforts continue.

Health officials have said urgent improvements are required to ensure the long-term sustainability and safety of care at the surgery.
