Cloudy Skies and Overnight Rain to Give Way to Misty, Chilly Nights Across Cumbria
Cloudy conditions and overnight rain are expected across Cumbria before brighter daytime spells arrive, bringing colder nights and a risk of fog.
The county will experience a mixture of cloud, rain and sunshine over the coming days, with temperatures varying between coastal communities and inland areas. Western and southern coastal locations are expected to remain relatively mild, reaching around 12°C, while higher and more exposed inland areas will be cooler. Rain is forecast to move across much of Cumbria overnight, with southern districts facing a greater likelihood of heavier showers.
Friday is expected to remain largely cloudy, although some areas may see occasional breaks in the cloud. Most places should stay dry during daylight hours, with temperatures generally reaching between 9°C and 12°C. The mildest conditions are expected along the coast, while Alston is forecast to remain cooler, with a maximum temperature of around 9°C.
Rain is expected to arrive during Friday evening and continue overnight in several parts of the county. The likelihood of precipitation is higher in southern areas, including Ulverston and Windermere, where the chances of rain are forecast at 77% and 58% respectively. Further north and east, Brampton, Wigton and Appleby are expected to have a lower risk of showers.
Saturday is forecast to remain mostly cloudy and overcast, although conditions should become calmer, with lighter winds. Daytime temperatures are expected to range from around 8°C to 11°C. Some light rain may affect parts of the county during the morning, but drier conditions are expected to develop later in the day, particularly towards the south.
Coastal communities are likely to retain slightly milder conditions through Saturday. Barrow, Whitehaven and Workington are forecast to reach around 10°C to 11°C, while inland locations will generally experience cooler temperatures. Mist may develop in some areas overnight, particularly where conditions become calmer and cloud begins to break.
Sunday is expected to bring some brighter intervals, particularly across western and central Cumbria. Northern and eastern districts may remain cloudier, with daytime temperatures generally reaching between 7°C and 10°C. Despite the possibility of sunshine, the overall feel is expected to remain chilly, especially in exposed areas.
The clearer conditions could bring a more noticeable drop in overnight temperatures on Sunday. Inland locations including Penrith and Alston are forecast to fall to around 1°C, increasing the likelihood of fog and mist in valleys and low-lying areas. Coastal Barrow is expected to remain comparatively milder, with overnight temperatures around 4°C to 6°C.
Monday is expected to begin with mist in some northern and inland locations before brighter conditions develop. Sunny spells are forecast across southern and western parts of the county, with daytime temperatures generally between 7°C and 10°C. Although the day should become brighter, the colder overnight conditions mean early travellers may encounter reduced visibility in places.
Coastal areas are likely to experience less severe overnight temperature drops than inland communities. Barrow is forecast to remain around 4°C to 6°C during the colder nights, while parts of the Eden Valley and higher inland locations could fall much closer to freezing. Drivers travelling early in the morning should be prepared for possible patches of mist or fog.
Tuesday is expected to start with sunny intervals across much of Cumbria, with temperatures rising to around 8°C to 11°C. Conditions may become breezier, although the day is generally expected to remain brighter than the start of the forecast period. Cloud is likely to increase later, bringing a renewed possibility of rain overnight and into Wednesday.
The town-by-town outlook highlights some differences across the county. Carlisle is expected to remain mostly cloudy through the weekend, with a brighter spell possible on Tuesday. Cockermouth, Egremont and Cleator Moor should see a mixture of cloud and sunshine, while overnight fog is possible in the area as temperatures fall early next week.
In the south, Barrow, Dalton-in-Furness and Grange-over-Sands are forecast to experience relatively mild daytime temperatures, reaching around 10°C to 12°C on Friday before settling closer to 10°C over the weekend. Light rain is possible overnight, followed by mist or fog as temperatures fall. Whitehaven and Workington are also expected to see brighter intervals early next week.
Further inland, Appleby, Brampton, Wigton and Aspatria are expected to experience cooler nights, with fog possible on Sunday night and mist lingering into Monday morning. Alston is likely to be among the colder locations, with overnight temperatures forecast to reach around 1°C. These conditions could affect visibility on rural roads and routes through valleys, particularly during the early morning.
The changing forecast means residents and visitors should prepare for a varied autumn weekend. A waterproof layer may be useful for Friday night and Saturday morning, while warmer clothing will be important during colder evenings and early starts. Anyone travelling through inland areas should allow for the possibility of reduced visibility where mist and fog develop.
The outlook is based on forecast information for the county, with conditions expected to change as the week progresses. While brighter spells are anticipated on Sunday and Monday, the return of cloud and possible rain overnight into Wednesday means unsettled conditions may continue in parts of Cumbria.
